Web24 mrt. 2024 · Acute ITP often lasts less than 6 months. It mainly occurs in children — both boys and girls — and is the most common type of ITP. Chronic ITP lasts 6 months or longer and mostly affects adults. However, some teens and children do get this type of ITP. Chronic ITP affects women two to three times more often than it affects men. WebWe do not exactly know what causes ITP. In children we think ITP occurs after a viral infection when the immune system become over active. We do not think this is always the case with ITP. In adult patients, the increase in bruising and bleeding is usually slow in onset (in children it usually comes on very suddenly after a viral infection).
