If you use a bolt or stud that is too long, it will crack the engine block when it bottoms out in the drilled hole, or if the unthreaded portion of the shank jams.

Check the block for cracks around the water jackets. On my Toyota truck,the head was milled such that the compression was 189 PSI,and blew the gasket,so a shim fixed it. Get a new stud, clean the hole out with brake cleaner & put some Permatex High Temperature thread sealant on the block side of the stud. That allows you to put a wrench on the nut and it heats up the broken stud in its hole causing it to loosen. A wire feed welder is best for that.
